I adore ribbon, always have - not sure if it's the colour or the texture. I love that ribbon can be used for numerous things, besides bow's in little girls hair, or for wrapping gifts... these pics were taken an a craft event, where Ebony & Ivory Ribbons had a stall - besides the gorgeous colours, I just loved the rows and pretty details....

Toast (UK site/ online sotre) is one of my favorite places to go for inispiration (also see Monday's post). They sell amazing items online, but for me the way they catalogue their items, is quite simply - fascinating.

Here for example, is a swlection of iamges from one of their catalogues ..... above ... crockery and linen tablecloths ...

cutlery with bone handles - or a very good imitation..

a snack .....

old style towels ....

and even something as simple as white wire hangers ....

I just simply love the way they put things together! I love photography (see my photoblog Thinking Aloud), so a regular pop into their site is a must ... to see what they're up to, what new goodies they have, and how they are styling them for their catalogue ...

one of the great benefits of wood, is that you can paint it, strip it, repaint, sand it down, varnish it, stain it ... you get it, don't you?

here are three great examples of how a coat of red, in this instance has totally livened up

the individual spaces....

how awesome is this staircase - so much more interesting in a vibrant red!!!

and a gorgeous old wooden seat for the patio .....

The Red Pantry

Are pantries a thing of the past? or, are they back in vogue?

All I know is that I do not have one, and would LOVE one .... okay don 't get me wrong we have loads of cupboards in our spacious kitchen, but it's not the same .... I'd love to be able to store my vases and jam jars and, and, and ... in neat rows, have eveything I need at hand ....it's also reminiscent of times gone by ....well you get it don't you?

This image from Home Life appeals not only because it is part of a pantry, but because it's orderly, has perfect packing shelves, is a crazy vibrant red and is decorated with old "posters"...... just perfect!!

how about you? do you have a pantry? do you think it's a necessity in our kitchen space?

Cupcakes for Tea

This was our Easter Sunday tea.

A bit late I know, but recently battling to keep up with events, and organising photos

and uploading and, and, and ... so my mottto: "better late than never" ....

cupcakes in vibrant colours and a vintage setting

I used standard vanilla cupcakes with a white choclate ganache, sprinkles, candy coated mini eggs and blue flowers for the decor.

The table was a setting of a vintage inspired tablecloth, polka dots napkins and simple, white crockery .... I will post more on the table in due course.

They are based on Ladybrand in the Free Sate - it's a place I haven't been, but on my to do very shortly list.... so until then I'll have to enjoy the images on their website .

{Echo} 6: Faces

In the sixth "chapter" of the Echo (Word) Challenge which Susan Tuttle of Ilka's Attic (blog) and her friend Christi are running, the word prompt is FACES.

So this is how it works, they put out a WORD prompt, and the key is to interpret the word through the camera lens.

I chose to use this image of a wooden sculpture, clearly depicting it's rather abstract face, and also the giant sunflower (below), possibly because sunflowers remind me of people standing in the field, facing and following the direction of the sun all day. To me, they are happy flowers and never fail to lift the spirits ....

Vintage Rose Kitchen: Red Pepper Pate

For Ruby Tuesday I've decided to do a recipe which zings with the vibrancy of red!

It's dead easy to make, keeps for three weeks and is delicious at any time with toast, crackers, cheeses etc.etc.etc. So let's get to it:

Ingredients:
4 large red peppers
3 garlic cloves (optional as is the quantity)
150g butter, melted (or approx 100g cream cheese)
10mls freshly chopped oregano & basil leaves
1 tbl Balsamic vinegar (or to taste)
Pinch salt
Dash Peri peri/ chilli sauce

Method:
Preheat oven to 240degrees
Line a medium oven tray with tinfoil
Cut peppers in half lengthways and remove seeds.
Arrange peppers and garlic cloves on tray and bake for 20 minutes
Cool and remove skins
Place peppers, garlic, vinegar and peri peri sauce etc. in a food processor and blend until smooth
With processor on slow, slowly pour in butter in a thin stream (or fold in cream cheese) until mixture is smooth and creamy
Stir in oregano/ basil mix
Place in an airtight container and refrigerate. Keeps for up to three weeks
Serve with a variety of crackers or breads and cheeses or cold meats

{Echo} 5: Melody

This is the fifth "chapter" of the Echo (Word) Challenge which Susan Tuttle of Ilka's Attic (blog) and her friend Christi are running. They put out a WORD prompt, and the key is to interpret the word through the camera lens. The current word is MELODY.

The mind runs amock with ideas on how to depict this one ... many ideas, maybe not enough photographs to demonstrate, so we need to get creative .... One of the first things that goes through my mind is the ocean, then voices, musical instruments...

I eventually played a round with a mosaic of Rubinstein's compostion Melody and images of a violin - settling on this one. To complement that I decide on a shot I'd taken of the musical fountains display at Brighwater Commons (an outdoor venue in Johannesburg South Africa).

I had a post in mind, for Sunday's Table, until I came across a link to Jessica Claire's site (photographer) on Ada & Darcy (Kellie Collis' gorgeous blog)... I and saw these fantastic table settings, so I chose to post this instead .... just look at the wonderful details, the colours, the textures and how beautifully captured they are. Although this was for a wedding, you could do something similar for a Sunday brunch, lunch or even a tea gathering! Why not?!

a vintage dressmakers dummy ....

Every now and again, I love to do a post on vintage details, that is, the little things that make a country styled home, a real home. Besides that I always find that there is a quirky element to the pictures I choose, making them more interesting for the viewer, so here is the latest offering, enjoy!

a rusty urn with a pumpkin

a seasonal wreath made of oak leaves and other materials. don't you just love the door!!!????

a sunburst mirror, old suitcases and other quirky items

Vintage Rose Kitchen: Strawberry Muffins

strawberry muffins served with ice cream and fresh strawberries

a great variation on the usual muffin with raisins and such fruit - using fresh fruit really does make a difference, and I find it's a perfect muffin to use as a dessert, as above.

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cup cake flour

½ cup digestive bran (optional)
1 tsp salt
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup sugar
2 cups sliced or quartered strawberries
2 eggs, beaten
½ cup cooking oil
Approx 125mls water (determine consistency - add more if digestive bran added)

The How to :

Preheat oven to 180degrees (or 350F)
Beat eggs, sugar and oil together
Add remaining dry ingredients and mix well
Add strawberries and fold into the mixture
Bake in muffin pans for approx 25 minutes
Allow to cool and serve with butter, cream or for a great dessert with fresh strawberries and ice cream!

a collage/ mosaic of pictures taken of the exterior of Le Bassecour - a french style home store, at 44 Stanley Avenue Milpark (Johannesburg) where you can get very, very lost with the amazing francophile items on sale - from furniture, to chandeliers (see pic), to mirrors, to crockery etc.etc.....
